Frenaros is built in a medium elevation of 75 meters. The scenery is plain without any special morphological fluctuations, with a small tendency from the south to the north.
TRANSPORT
Frenaros is serviced by a very good transporting net. On the north east it is connected with the village of Derynia (about 4 kilometers), on the north west with the old road Nicosia-Limassol (about 7 km), on the west with the village of Avgorou (around 8 km), on the south west with the village of Liopetri (around 5 km) and on the south east with the village of Sotira (around 3, 5 km).
POPULATION
The short distance of the village from the city of Famagusta , the very good road connection and the thrift agricultural works are the main factors that contributed to its population increase . In 1881 the residents were 231 and were raised to 313 in 1891,to 397 in 1901 ,to 500 in 1911,to 582 in 1921 ,to 796 in 1931 ,to 1101 in 1946,to 1439 in 1960 and to 1745 in 1973.In 1976 the residents of the village were 2231 and to 2708 in 1982. The population fluctuations after 1974 are because of the settlement of many Greek Cypriots in the village and mostly from the district of Famagusta. In the last census of 2001 the residents of the village were 3,306. Today’s population comes up to 4200 people.
NAME
The village existed during the medieval years .In the old maps it is named as Frinaria.According to a version the name of the village came from the Freres Mineures , The Frankish people ,Latin monks who, as it is mentioned, owned a monastery in the area, the one of St Mary's Hortakiotissas in the south east of the village (known as St Mary of the Hortakion) .The relationship between the Frankish people with Frenaros is not testified but Simos Menardos say that it is possible to have owned the area. The name of the village must have come from them . In the Moreos Chronicle , the Frankish monks were called Fremenourei. The name Frenaros came from the name Fre minors (Freminors).
A second version for the name of the village mentions that in the area of St Mary's the Hortakiotissa, during the Byzantine years and the Frank years had monks and monasteries. The name Frenaria in French means area of the monks. It is a compound word consisted of Freres (monk) and aria (area). So, Freraria means the area of the monks. In order for Freraria to sound better it became Frenaria and Frenaros to the Greek Cypriot dialect.
The medieval settlement , was around 2 kilometers southern of the today settlement and the place is known today as the old Frenaros . From the remainders it seems that it was a big settlement and only the church of Saint Georgio,Saint Theodoros and Saint Mary's Hortakiotissas are saved.
The church of Archangel Michael in Frenaros (possibly of the 12 th century) is also worth mentioned. The church of Saint Andronicus is also of the 12 th century on the north east of the village .Next to this there is also the important church of Saint Marinas (built in the 15th century). The existence of so many churches in the area shows its significance in the Byzantine years and after. Nevertheless the area had been also inhabited during the old pre historic years as it is proved from the discovery of the Neolithic period settlement in the Vounistiri area.
